Elizabeth Tavella is a PhD Candidate in Italian Studies at the University of Chicago. She is currently working on her dissertation, which explores through a close reading of 20th century Italian literature how the construction of the boundary between humans and other animals has led to the oppression of both nonhuman and human beings. Alternate views to oppression and violence are also examined by investigating the pathways to more inclusive, ethical, and compassionate societies and human-animal relationships as they are envisioned in the selected literary texts.
